This horse is a typical Dare style horse. The V-shaped pattern (carved into the front of the horse) is part of a martingale chest harness, a standard feature of Dare horses.

At one time, the reins on these horses were attached to rings on the bit, went down through the rings on the top of the V-shaped harness and then to the rider.

This type of harness is used by equestrians to control the position of the horses head while riding.
